Propers for the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Book of Common Prayer 1928.

LORD, we pray thee that thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

1 WHOSO dwelleth under the defence of the Most High, * shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say unto the LORD, Thou art my hope, and my stronghold; * my God, in him will I trust.
3 For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the  hunter, * and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers; * his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night, * nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, * nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day.
7 A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand; * but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold, * and see the reward of the ungodly.
9 For thou, LORD, art my hope; * thou hast set thine house of defence very high.
10 There shall no evil happen unto thee, * neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, * to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee in their hands, * that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder: * the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him; * I will set him up, because he hath known my Name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will hear him; * yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honour.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, * and show him my salvation.

1 IT is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, * and to sing praises unto thy Name, O Most Highest;
2 To tell of thy loving-kindness early in the morning, * and of thy truth in the night season;
3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the lute; * upon a loud instrument, and upon the harp.
4 For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy works; * and I will rejoice in giving praise for the operations of thy hands.
5 O LORD, how glorious are thy works! * thy thoughts are very deep.
6 An unwise man doth not well consider this, * and a fool doth not understand it.
7 When the ungodly are green as the grass, and when all the workers of wickedness do flourish, * then shall they be destroyed for ever; but thou, LORD, art the Most Highest for evermore.
8 For lo, thine enemies, O LORD, lo, thine enemies shall perish; * and all the workers of wickedness shall be destroyed.
9 But my horn shall be exalted like the horn of an unicorn; * for I am anointed with fresh oil.
10 Mine eye also shall see his lust of mine enemies, * and mine ear shall hear his desire of the wicked that arise up against me.
11 The righteous shall flourish like a palm-tree, * and shall spread abroad like a cedar in Lebanon.
12 Such as are planted in the house of the LORD, * shall flourish in the courts of the house of our God.
13 They also shall bring forth more fruit in their age, * and shall be fat and well-liking;
14 That they may show how true the LORD my strength is, * and that there is no unrighteousness in him.

I THEREFORE, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

IT came to pass, as Jesus went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go and answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? And they could not answer him again to these things. And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Announcements for Sunday, October 1st, 2023

Altar Flowers – If you would like to give glory to God, to honor or remember someone, or to commemorate a special occasion with flowers to beautify the altar, the cost is $75, and the flowers last 2-3 weeks. So if you want your tribute to be for two different reasons, you can also do that! Father Tom’s Vacation – Father Tom will still be on vacation through Monday, October 2nd. Fr. Terrence (781-801-4813, frtmcgill3@gmail.com) will be covering our service today, and also pastoral care until then. Senior Warden Chris Gerry (919-775-5067) will be contact person for all other matters that may arise during this time.

Reminder of Vestry Meeting for October
Our regular monthly meeting for October will be held on Saturday, October 14th, at noon.  As always, members of the parish are welcome to attend and observe, though only elected members vote.

ACC and Diocese of the Holy Cross Synod – A reminder that the XXV Synod of the ACC, and also our Diocesan Synod, is upcoming: October 10th – 13th, in Orlando, Florida. Fr. Tom and Fr. Terrence will both be attending, but as it is during the week, there should not be any changes to our usual pattern of Sunday worship. But please pray for wisdom and guidance for all those attending! This prayer, found on page 36 of The Book of Common Prayer 1928, is especially appropriate for the weeks leading up to, and of course during, Synod:

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who by thy Holy Spirit didst preside in the Council of the blessed Apostles, and hast promised, through thy Son Jesus Christ, to be with thy Church to the end of the world; We beseech thee to be with the Council of thy Church [soon to be / now] assembled in thy Name and Presence. Save them from all error, ignorance, pride, and prejudice; and of thy great mercy vouchsafe, we beseech thee, so to direct, sanctify, and govern them in their work, by the mighty power of the Holy Ghost, that the comfortable Gospel of Christ may be truly preached, truly received, and truly followed, in all places, to the breaking down of the kingdom of sin, Satan, and death; till at length the whole of thy dispersed sheep, being gathered into one fold, shall become partakers of everlasting life; through the merits and death of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
