The Propers for the Tenth Sunday after Trinity.
The Book of Common Prayer, 1928.

The Collect.

LET thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of thy humble servants; and, that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as shall please thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Old Testament Lesson: Wisdom 11:1-12:2

FOR thou canst shew thy great strength at all times when thou wilt; and who may withstand the power of thine arm? For the whole world before thee is as a little grain of the balance, yea, as a drop of the morning dew that falleth down upon the earth. But thou hast mercy upon all; for thou canst do all things, and winkest at the sins of men, because they should amend. For thou lovest all the things that are, and abhorrest nothing which thou hast made: for never wouldest thou have made any thing, if thou hadst hated it. And how could any thing have endured, if it had not been thy will? or been preserved, if not called by thee? But thou sparest all: for they are thine, O Lord, thou lover of souls. For thine incorruptible Spirit is in all things. Therefore chastenest thou them by little and little that offend, and warnest them by putting them in remembrance wherein they have offended, that leaving their wickedness they may believe on thee, O Lord.

The Psalter: Psalm 103

PRAISE the LORD, O my soul; * and all that is within me, praise his holy Name.
2 Praise the LORD, O my soul, * and forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thy sin, * and healeth all thine infirmities;
4 Who saveth thy life from destruction, * and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness;
5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, * making thee young and lusty as an eagle.
6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment * for all them that are oppressed with wrong.
7 He showed his ways unto Moses, * his works unto the children of Israel.
8 The LORD is full of compassion and mercy, * long-suffering, and of great goodness.
9 He will not alway be chiding; * neither keepeth he his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; * nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses.
11 For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth; * so great is his mercy also toward them that fear him.
12 Look how wide also the east is from the west; * so far hath he set our sins from us.
13 Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children; * even so is the LORD merciful unto them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth whereof we are made; * he remembereth that we are but dust.
15 The days of man are but as grass; * for he flourisheth as a flower of the field.
16 For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone; * and the place thereof shall know it no more.
17 But the merciful goodness of the LORD endureth for ever and ever upon them that fear him; * and his righteousness upon children’s children;
18 Even upon such as keep his covenant, * and think upon his commandments to do them.
19 The LORD hath prepared his seat in heaven, * and his kingdom ruleth over all.
20 O praise the LORD, ye angels of his, ye that excel in strength; * ye that fulfil his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his word.
21 O praise the LORD, all ye his hosts; * ye servants of his that do his pleasure.
22 O speak good of the LORD, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion: * praise thou the LORD, O my soul.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
Answer.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle. 1 Cor. xii. 1.

CONCERNING spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles. carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

The Gospel. St. Luke xix. 41.

AND when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and com pass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; be cause thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. And he taught daily in the temple.

Announcements for Sunday, August 13th, 2023

If you are visiting us – Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased that you joined us, and we hope that your worship here is a blessing. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and provide your contact information. Include your email address in order to be placed on the parish email list: you won’t be bombarded with mail, but it’s a good way to keep in touch. And may God bless you!

August Vestry Meeting – Our regular monthly Vestry meeting for August is/was this Saturday, August 12th, at noon here at the church. Our Senior Warden, Chris Gerry, will likely have a brief report on it Sunday morning!

Ordo Calendars – It may be only August, but it is time to order our new Ordo Calendars for 2024! The traditional calendar will cost $8 each, and the full-color liturgical calendar with beautiful photos of various churches will be $21 each. Please tell Susan Saulsbury (ezteatime@gmail.com or 410-984-4401) which calendar you wish to order by August 20th. Many thanks! Ordo calendars indicate the liturgical season of the year, holy days celebrated, and the liturgical colors appropriate to the day and season, among other useful pieces of information. Many find them helpful in devotion!

Altar Flowers – If you would like to give glory to God, to honor or remember someone, or to commemorate a special occasion with flowers to beautify the altar, the cost is $75, and the flowers last 2-3 weeks. So if you want your tribute to be for two different reasons, you can also do that! Simply give the information you would like to be included in the bulletin to Susan Saulsbury, and make your check payable to Christ Church Anglican. Many thanks, and God bless!

Planned Giving – It’s never a bad time to plan for the support of the parish, financially! And now that we are almost two-thirds of way through the year, it’s not too early to think about year-end giving – known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD – or even legacy / endowment giving, to support the mission and ministry of Christ Church Anglican not only now, but well into the future. That such contributions may provide you with a tax benefit for helping our parish is an added bonus! If this is something you would like to discuss, please contact McNeil Chestnut, our Stewardship Coordinator, and he will gladly assist you. Contact him at 919-210-8904, or by email at mchestnut@nc.rr.com.

Prayers for Fr. John Sharpe – Please keep former Christ Church Rector Fr. John Sharpe in your prayers, as he is suffering from a severe attack of sciatica, which is giving him a great deal of pain, and has restricted him to a wheelchair for movement. He misses coming to church, and sends his love, as well as his request for our continued prayers!

Prayers for Pastor Buddy’s son Joseph – Pastor Buddy is a Presbyterian minister, who is also a faithful attendee and communicant at our Wednesday service. He requests prayers for his son, who is fighting cancer.

This concludes our Announcements. May the Lord bless and keep you, and grant you an excellent week!

Faithfully,

Fr. Tom Harbold
