The Propers for the Sixth Sunday after Trinity.
The Book of Common Prayer, 1928.

The Collect.

O GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s under standing; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Old Testament Lesson. Isaiah 57:13b-19.

He that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain; And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him.

The Psalter. Psalms 16 and 111

PRESERVE me, O God; * for in thee have I put my trust.
2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, * Thou art my God; I have no good like unto thee.
3 All my delight is upon the saints that are in the earth, * and upon such as excel in virtue.
4 But they that run after another god * shall have great trouble.
5 Their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer, * neither make mention of their names within my lips.
6 The LORD himself is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup; * thou shalt maintain my lot.
7 The lot is fallen unto me in a fair ground; * yea, I have a goodly heritage.
8 I will thank the LORD for giving me warning; * my reins also chasten me in the night season.
9 I have set the LORD alway before me; * for he is on my right hand, therefore I shall not fall.
10 Wherefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: * my flesh also shall rest in hope.
11 For why? thou shalt not leave my soul in hell; * neither shalt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.
12 Thou shalt show me the path of life: in thy presence is the fulness of joy, * and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore.

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I WILL give thanks unto the LORD with my whole heart, * secretly among the faithful, and in the congregation.
2 The works of the LORD are great, * sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
3 His work is worthy to be praised and had in honour, * and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 The merciful and gracious LORD hath so done his marvellous works, * that they ought to be had in remembrance.
5 He hath given meat unto them that fear him; * he shall ever be mindful of his covenant.
6 He hath showed his people the power of his works, * that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; * all his commandments are true.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever, * and are done in truth and equity.
9 He sent redemption unto his people; * he hath commanded his covenant for ever; holy and reverend is his Name.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; * a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; his praise endureth for ever.

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle. Romans 6:3-11.

KNOW ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Gospel. St. Matthew 5:20-26.

JESUS said unto his disciples, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Announcements for Sunday, July 16th, 2023

If you are visiting us – Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you, and we hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and provide appropriate contact information. Include your email address in order to be placed on our parish email list: you won’t be bombarded with mail, but it’s a good way to keep in touch. And may God bless you!

We’ve expanded our presence on the Internet!

Our wonderful IT/Social Media team is pleased to announce that we’re now on TWO more social media platforms!

First, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve started a page on SoundCloud. You can find it here:

 https://soundcloud.com/ccanglicansp

SoundCloud is a site primarily for musical artists, but like many churches we are using it as a way to present an audio file of each Sunday morning sermon. This allows you to easily review a sermon you heard on a particular Sunday to gain new insights, catch something you missed, or hear just the sermon from a particular Sunday on which you weren’t able to be with us.

Our current SoundCloud account allows for 3 hours of content… so once we reach that, older content will be taken down to make room for the newest sermons.

We hope that your Christian walk will be edified by these sermons.

Also: we are now on MeWe!  For those who are not familiar with MeWe, it is a Facebook competitor whose purported aim is to be more free-speech friendly and be free of the pervasive tracking found on Facebook.  In order to go to our MeWe page, you’ll need to create a free MeWe account.  Once that’s done, you should be able to go to our page which is found here:

 https://mewe.com/p/christchurchangl

While MeWe has a large following, it is by no means as large as Facebook.  Nevertheless, we are hoping that it will prove to be another place where people looking for a church home may perhaps learn about us and come visit.

Traveling mercies for all those vacationing – May God bless and keep all of our number who may be traveling, whether within our state, to other parts of the country, or abroad, and with your loved ones, that your travels may be safe and your stresses (from traffic, highway construction, or whatever other cause) be minimal! And may He bring you safely back home again, once more.

Holy Days and Commemorations this Week:

Saturday, July 22nd: St. Mary Magdalene

Wishing you a safe, healthy, and rewarding week. May God bless both your labor and your leisure, and may both bring you closer to Him!

Faithfully,

Fr. Tom Harbold
