Liturgical Notes: 1) A reminder that we continue with our addition of the Old Testament Lesson and Psalm at least through Trinitytide, and if it is well-received, perhaps longer! The Old Testament Lesson is found in your pew Bibles; both the Scripture citation and the page number are indicated in the bulletin. The Psalm is found in your Prayer Book; again, both the number of the Psalm and the page number in the BCP are found in your bulletins. However, both are given in full in the “Collect and Lessons,” below. 2) Yesterday, June 24th, was the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, which we will commemorate with the use of its Collect, following the Collect of the Day.

O LORD, we beseech thee mercifully to hear us; and grant that we, to whom thou hast given an hearty desire to pray, may, by thy mighty aid, be defended and comforted in all dangers and adversities; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 

The Collect for the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.

ALMIGHTY God, by whose providence thy servant John Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour by preaching repentance;* Make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth’s sake; through† Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Old Testament. Jeremiah 31:1-14

AT the same time, saith the LORD, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. Thus saith the LORD, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest. The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry. Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things. The Epistle. 1 St. Peter v. 5-11.

ALL of you be subject one to another, and. be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. THEN drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

Vestry Summer “Sabbatical” – It has long been the custom at Christ Church for the Vestry to take a month off from meeting, during the summer; and July, at the height of the “vacation season,” seems the most logical month to do that! Accordingly, there will not be a regularly scheduled Saturday meeting of the Vestry next month. If there is anything that needs urgently to be acted upon, it will be discussed via email and voted upon during a brief special meeting, held following the Sunday service (assuming a quorum is present), as we have done in the past. Many thanks to all our Vestry members for your faithful and dedicated service! Enjoy your break, and we will resume our regularly scheduled monthly meetings in August, to prepare for the resumption of our program year in September.
