Propers and Announcements for the Fourth Sunday after Easter, 2023
The Collect & Lessons for the Fourth Sunday after Easter.
The Book of Common Prayer 1928.
The Collect.
O ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle. St. James i. 17.
EVERY good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
The Gospel. St. John xvi. 5.
JESUS said unto his disciples, Now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Weekly Parish Announcements for Sunday, May 7th, 2023.
If you are visiting us – Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you, and hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and provide appropriate contact information. Include your email address in order to be placed on our parish email list: you won’t be bombarded with mail, but it’s a good way to keep in touch. And may God bless you!
“Let there be light!” and Wednesday Eucharist – As is probably abundantly obvious to all, by the brightness and consistency of the lights, our new LED lighting has been installed! Many thanks to George Hillard for coordinating this, to Keith Paller of Tin Whistles Electric LLC who did the work, and to Bud and Susan Saulsbury, Becky Addison and Travis Case, and anyone else who was involved with taking down and reassembling the altar and sanctuary. With that project behind us, we will be resuming our regularly scheduled mid-week services of Holy Communion this Wednesday, May 10th, at 10 o’clock. In addition to Communion, these services include the opportunity for the laying on of hands and anointing with oil for healing, for those who desire it. But you don’t have to be in need of healing to attend!
Adult Christian Education – Our Adult Christian Education class on “Being a Anglican” continues this Sunday, May 7th, at 9 o’clock a.m. in the Rector’s Office. Please feel free to join in; you need not have attended the earlier sessions (“cheat sheets” will be available for the parts you missed)! As I’ve mentioned previously, this class is equally suitable for those who are new to Anglicanism, and those who are long-time Anglicans, but who wish a “refresher course.”
The Coronation of King Charles III – Although we here in these United States (earlier “United Colonies”) fought a brutal and bloody War of Independence from the Crown and Parliament of Great Britain, back in the 18th century, we soon patched up our differences, and the United States and the United Kingdom have long enjoyed a close friendship and alliance: through two World Wars, a long Cold War, and the decades since, up to the present day.
We mourn with them the passing of the late great Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving Monarch of Great Britain, and the second-longest-serving in the worldd; and we join with them in hopes and prayers that King Charles III, whose Coronation is this Saturday, May 5th, 2023, will prove to be a good and worthy successor to Her Late Majesty. The following prayer is from the Church in Wales, lightly edited for our context here:
Heavenly Father, we pray for King Charles: for strength to serve his realms, and the worldwide Commonwealth of Nations; for courage to defend the Faith in word and deed; for a spirit of devotion and duty; and for grace to care for his people.
V. Lord, in thy mercy,
R. Hear our prayer.
Amen.
He will be crowned, on Saturday, a Christian Monarch. May he, by God’s grace, reign and serve as one, also!
