Propers and Announcements for the Third Sunday after Easter, 2023

The Propers for the Third Sunday after Easter.

The Book of Common Prayer 1928.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY God, who showest to them that are in error the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness; Grant unto all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s Religion, that they may avoid* those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Epistle. 1 St. Pet. ii. 11.

DEARLY beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: as free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

The Gospel. St. John xvi. 16.

JESUS said to his disciples, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour it come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

Weekly Parish Announcements for Sunday, April 30th, 2023.

If you are visiting us – Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you, and hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and provide appropriate contact information. Include your email address in order to be placed on our parish email list: you won’t be bombarded with mail, but it’s a good way to keep in touch. And may God bless you!

Wednesday Eucharist – Please note: we will NOT have our usual midweek service of Holy Communion this Wednesday, May 3rd, as we will be putting the place back together after having our current fluorescent lights replaced with LEDs on the 1st and 2nd of May. Midweek Communion, with the opportunity for the laying on of hands and anointing with oil for healing, will resume next week (May 10th).

Adult Christian Education – After our unexpected loss of electric power last Sunday, prior to the service, our Adult Christian Education class will be resuming our ongoing study of “Being a Anglican” this Sunday, April 23rd, at 9 o’clock a.m. in the Rector’s Office. Before Easter, we focused on the historical aspects of Anglicanism in the UK and America; now we shall be addressing the more theological and liturgical elements of our Anglican heritage, and our distinctive expression of the Christian faith. Please feel free to join in, even if you missed the first half: “cheat sheets” will be available to bring you up to speed on what you missed!

Eastertide – Easter Sunday may be behind us, but remember that “the Great Forty Days” of Easter, in which Christ appeared to His Disciples after His Resurrection, will continue until the Feast of the Ascension (May 18th, this year)! So feel free to continue wishing people Happy Easter (who knows? it might generate an opportunity to talk with someone about the faith, or about our parish), or greeting your Christian friends with “Alleluia! Christ is risen!” (“The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!” being the appropriate response). We say “Christ IS risen” for a reason: the Resurrection is not merely a past event, but a present reality!
